Reflections - A to Z Challenge !!

26 Posts in a month !! The feeling is yet to sink in !!

Yes. I have written 26 posts in 30 days after accepting the AtoZ Challenge. I wanted to take up this challenge last year but let it slip by. Did not want to let it go this year and took it up, in the last moment. I finalized my theme at the list minute and was not very sure about how or what I would write.

As if the challenge in itself was not daunting enough, I made it more difficult for myself by complicating it. The theme for my challenge was Emotions, where I decided to write about one emotion every day. The complication kicked in when I decided to write a story and express each emotion thru a character in the story.

The adrenaline rush helped me zip through the first few days. But as days passed by, the amount of time I spent on my blog increased exponentially. More than the actual writing, it was building the story line which was exhausting. I had to be sure of defining every character, getting the story line right to ensure continuity and on top of all this, stick to the emotion beginning with the alphabet for the day !!

The last week of the challenge was even tougher. Making sure the story had a proper ending was one challenge but the biggest challenge was to find emotions that begin with letters X, Y and Z.

As I look back at all the posts now, I can't help but feel proud of myself. Having written a grand total of 20 posts in 5 years, I have now written 26 posts in the last 30 days. There were no scheduled posts, making sure I blogged on every day. I missed out posting on two days and had to cover up the next day with two posts.

I have to admit, watching the page views increase everyday gave me the confidence to keep writing. A big thank you to all the bloggers who stopped by my blog and to the generous ones who commented on the posts. It felt great to read comments from people across the globe.

This challenge would not have been possible without the help of  three people.

To Abhi, who lent a patient ear every time I discussed about the story and the characters. She was my go to option every time I needed to visualize a character or take the story forward. Her curiosity about how the story would shape up, made sure I put in more effort every time I wrote. She was also generous enough in letting me write at home while she took care of the kid

A big thank you to my friend Cauvery for her constant support, encouragement and feedback. She was the one who introduced me to the world of blogging and made me write my first blog 7 years ago. ;-). She is a brilliant writer and I really wish and hope I can write like her one day. You can read her posts at www.countdownbegun.wordpress.com

My friend and colleague Dinesh, who was the self appointed story consultant during the challenge. We debated every character and more often than not ended up disagreeing with each other. His critical feedback on every post made sure the story stayed on track.

Finally, a special mention to the entire team at A to Z Challenge for their super effort in pulling this off. Their response to any queries through email was quick and helpful. Thank You !!

Z for Zestful !!

"I have to go back to Australia Karan. After my post graduation, I enrolled for a diploma course in Still Photography. Two months earlier, I have received an offer to work with a group of photographers on a year long documentary. The offer was a dream come true for me." Karan was left speechless on hearing Aditi speak.

"So, if you are going to ask me about whether we can settle down together, I don't think we can Karan. Atleast not in the next year or two. I have a golden opportunity to learn and I don't think I can let it go."

"Aditi is it because of what happened between us three years back?", Karan was lost for words, as he tried to convince Aditi.

"No Karan. This has nothing to do with that. Don't ever think of this as getting back to you. You have to understand how lucky I am to be chosen for this documentary and I cant let this slip thru my hands."

That discussion had happened two years back and Karan still remembered every word of it. A few days after that discussion, Aditi flew back to Australia. Karan and Kumar exchanged pleasantries at the airport as they bid Aditi goodbye.

The meeting with the Mumbai team was successful and Karan and Rajiv had the initial funding for their idea. In the last two years, their start up had been largely successful and making a name for itself in the market.  Karan and Aditi spoke regularly on the phone but Karan never tried to broach the topic of their being together.

Now two years later, Karan was sitting in his office, going through the latest article on how their company was fast becoming a name to reckon with in the Indian market. The company was nominated in the Top 10 Emerging Start ups of  the year category and many expected them to be runaway winners. As he was skimming thru the article Karan's phone buzzed.

"Hi Karan. How are you doing. I have been hearing great things about you and your company. Congratulations."

Karan immediately recognized the voice on the other end of the phone. "Thanks a lot Kumar. The hard work and commitment of our team has paid off.  I have been hearing a lot about you as well. Looks like your consultancy work is in great demand. Have read quite a few reports that you have written."

"You are being generous Karan. On a serious note, I am calling you with a business offer Karan. I was wondering if we can partner with your firm."

After what felt like a small pause, Karan replied, "That would be great Kumar. If you are in town, we can catch up today evening at my office."

"That would be wonderful. Will be there by 7 in the evening. See you then", Kumar made a note of the meeting in his calendar.

Kumar was sitting in Karan's office shuffling through the magazines on the table. The consultant in him was busy assessing the office ambiance and the surroundings. The office felt like a happening place and Kumar felt the place had a feel good factor. His thoughts were interrupted by the receptionist's voice.

"Excuse me sir, you are here for?"

"I am here to meet Mr. Karan."

"Mr. Karan? which department Sir?", the receptionist was sure she never heard that name before.

Kumar sounded amused. "I want to meet your MD Mr. Karan." It was then he suddenly realized.

"I am sorry, I am here to meet Mr. Karthik Narayan, your Managing Director."

"Sure sir", said the receptionist and guided Kumar to the MD's cabin.

"Hey Kumar, pleased to see you.", Karan shook hands with Kumar.

"You have a great office Karan, Congratulations on your success, you deserve every bit of it." , Kumar was lavish in his  praise and he meant every word of what he said.

"Thanks Kumar. Thank You so much.", Karan said as they settled into the lounge. "Rajiv is travelling abroad for some business meeting. He would have loved to join us for this meeting", said Karan.

"Oh okay. By the way, how is Aditi doing", asked Kumar, sipping the refreshing coffee.

"She is doing good. Her documentary was well appreciated and she is about to start her next one. She said she might travel to India as part of the documentary."

"That's nice to hear. What about your amma and appa and where is Akshaya now, its been a long time since I met them", asked Kumar.

"Akshu is doing her MS in the US. Amma and Appa are currently visiting her on a three month vacation."

After the niceties were done, both of them got down to discuss their partnership. It was an hour long discussion and at the end of it Karan and Kumar decided they would be business partners as well.

The finer details of the partnership would be worked out by the respective teams and the draft agreement would be ready in a few days.

By the time both of them stepped out of office, it was almost ten in the night. From being the best of friends to strangers and then back together as business partners, their association had come a full circle.

As they walked to the car parking, they felt zestful.

Y for Yearned !!

Karan tried reaching out to Rajiv on the phone and when there was no response from him, he decided to go to his place.

It was early morning. He was very sure he could get to meet Rajiv and he was proved right. As soon as he rang the bell, Rajiv opened the door.

"Hi Rajiv. Got some time to talk?", Rajiv was surprised to see Karan at his door.

"Yeah sure. Give me 5 minutes I will be ready."

As Karan waited on his bike, Rajiv came down and both of them drove to the tea point which they used to frequent previously.

"Let me get straight to the point Rajiv. Mr. Mridul called me yesterday regarding your conversation with him. I was curious to know why did you want to talk to the MD personally.", Karan did not want to beat around the bush.

"I am not surprised he called you Karan. In fact I knew he would call you with this information. I wanted to talk to their MD and convey my inability to continue with the team."

"Rajiv, I have been asking you the same question again and again. I still feel we can settle our differences and get this on track. I am sure you must have noticed how positive the Mumbai team is about our business idea.".

"I am not really sure if we can go back to that Karan. Any business or for that matter any partnership is built on trust. We have already failed each other once . I am not sure if we can take the big step forward when we don't have trust in ourselves.", Rajiv wanted to be straightforward.

"I don't think we have gone to the extent of breaking each other's trust Rajiv. If that was the case, I am sure both of us would not be sitting here now and discussing this and I am also sure every partnership has its own share of ups and downs before it succeeds."

"All that sounds good in theory Karan. But imagine the same incident happening two months into our business when we have committed ourselves to it. That would be catastrophic for both of us.", Rajiv replied.

"I am sure we will learn from our experience Rajiv", Karan felt the discussion was going in the right direction.

"Let me think over this Karan. I am still not convinced about this", Rajiv sounded cautious.

"I have an idea Rajiv. Let me know if you like it. Let us take this step by step.  As the first step, I feel we should talk to the Mumbai team and tell them we are ready for the final presentation. Both of us shall be part of the call."

Karan continued as Rajiv nodded his approval. " If the Mumbai team are ready to take our idea to the next stage, let us then get into the nuances of our partnership and how we can avoid a repeat of such incidents."

Rajiv seemed to be okay with the idea of taking it one step at a time. After all, the final presentation would also give him a chance to showcase his contribution to the team.

"And just to let you know, I had a talk with Kumar yesterday. We caught up after a long time and I think we have managed to start the process of trying to bury our past issues." Karan did not want to let Rajiv know about it through anybody else.

"Oh okay. Its been a long time I met with Kumar. He seems to be pretty busy these days.", Rajiv's reply was more like a question, but Karan did not bother to reply.

"Let me call up Mr. Mridul and tell him the latest development. Let us ask him to schedule a call with Mr. Sudheer later in the evening so that we can update him on the same.", Karan listened as Rajiv outlined their plan for the day.

"We will also have to call a meeting with our team and start preparing for the final presentation. Lets make sure we showcase our best in the final presentation.", Karan said it with an air of his rediscovered confidence.

Later that evening, Karan and Rajiv were sitting in the restaurant along with their entire team. The call with Mr. Sudheer was positive and they now had a date set for their final presentation in Mumbai.

"Make sure you put your best efforts. I am sure my team will be happy to work with you." was Sudheer's final comment during the call.

As Karan drove back home, he was elated. The meeting with the team went well. Everybody in the team sounded very excited and were ready for the challenge. Karan started to feel good about the whole day.

The moment he had always yearned for was finally coming true.

As Karan zipped through the night roads, it started to rain.

X for X-rayed !!

After they finished dinner, Karan offered to drop Aditi back at the hotel.

"Aditi, can we talk for sometime before I drop you back at your hotel. I will try to not take too much time of yours.", Karan asked as they drove back to the hotel.

"Not now Karan. I feel stressed out after all the discussions. I don't think I am in a mood to have any sort of conversation now. Can we talk sometime later, may be tomorrow.", Aditi guessed what Karan wanted to talk about and she did not want to do the talking now. She wanted to have that discussion with a fresh and objective mind.

"Sure. Whatever you say Adi.", Karan said in a low tone.

Aditi noticed he had used her pet name and smiled to herself.

After dropping her at the hotel, Karan made a call to Rajiv. He was still not sure about why Rajiv had wanted to talk to the MD personally and he wanted to confront him directly. His thoughts were broken by Rajiv's voice.

"Hey Karan, can I call you back tomorrow. I am in the midst of something very important. Will give you a call tomorrow morning. Bye." before Karan could react Rajiv disconnected the call.

As soon as the call was disconnected, Karan received a text message from Rajiv. "Text me if there is something important."

Karan was sure Rajiv knew why he was calling him. He felt he was avoiding him intentionally.

Karan was upset with himself. For the second time in the last few minutes, his intentions were clear to the people he was talking to - first with Aditi and now with Rajiv. It was as if his thoughts were exposed.

He felt X-rayed.

W for Weary !!

As Karan approached the table, he could see Aditi and Kumar deep in conversation. That both of them stopped their conversation as soon as he reached the table did not make him feel any better.

Settling down in his seat, he looked at Aditi and mouthed the words,"what next". He was not really sure what they were supposed to be discussing, especially with Kumar around.

"Aditi, I never realised you and Kumar were friends earlier.", Karan's sarcastic question broke the silence. Kumar looked at Karan and then Aditi and went back to fiddling with his phone.

"Kumar and I met when we were in school. Kumar's grandparents stayed next door and he used to visit them for two months every year. That is how we met each other." Aditi answered as if she had anticipated that question.

"Oh, and I have never heard you mention him in our four years of college." Karan continued being sarcastic.

"Yeah I did not mention it because I and Kumar were not in touch during my graduation days. Little did i foresee you and Kumar ending up as friends and then all three ending up here in this situation", Aditi relpied.

"Kumar knew about you only after we broke up. I was in a very bad state and Kumar was the one who helped me get back to being normal. During that phase, Kumar insisted on wanting to meet you but I resisted him from that." Aditi looked at Kumar who was still fiddling with his phone.

"After about three months after joining his MBA, Kumar and I were discussing his college life and that was when he told me about his friend Karan and how they seemed to be kicking off well. Though I did not give it much thought initially, that name sounded familiar and then I realised. But yet again I resisted from telling Kumar."

"You should have told me then itself Aditi.", Kumar spoke, still looking down at his phone.

He then lifted his head, settled his gaze on Karan and continued, "You should have told me it was the same guy who ditched you. I would have settled scores on your behalf. Instead you chose to hide it from me and it took me another year and half to realise his true colors." Kumar sounded more hurt than angry.

Kumar continued speaking even as Aditi and Karan stared at him. His silence was now being replaced by a steady flow of words. "The first year of MBA was a breeze because of him. He was a great friend and time flew when we were together. We managed to be in the same group for every project and that made our academic projects exciting. Sharing the same interests such as sports and business made sure we spent endless hours discussing and debating."

Karan looked at Kumar as he continued reminiscing their college days. He felt like speaking but let Kumar continue.

"As time passed by, Karan and me even discussed plans to set up our own business. I am sure you remember it", Kumar stared directly at Karan.

Karan just stared in reply to Kumar's question.

"I was very sure our friendship would expand way beyond the two years of academics. Little did I realise that I was dealing with a person who wouldn't mind changing his colors to adapt to the situation."

"I never ever tried to do that Kumar." It was Karan's turn to speak out.

Aditi just stared at both of them, not wanting to interfere or take sides.

"You did Karan and I am not surprised you are denying it now. I wouldn't have expected anything else from you."

"Stop it Kumar. I have had enough of your rant. You should have bothered to ask me or talk to me directly before you made your conclusions."

"What did you want me to talk to you about Karan. About how you managed to mislead me during the entire college elections. All the time I was under the impression that you wanted me to be the head of the Student Council. Even though I was not even remotely interested, I agreed to it because you wanted me to contest."

Aditi knew about the Council election and the aftermath of the election. Kumar had told her the entire story. She recollected how he was furious with Karan because of the election.

"And I wanted you to be the President of the Student council. I never for once wanted to back stab you  Kumar. What happened that day was something which I did not plan and did not expect would happen.", Karan said.

"How very interesting Karan. We planned for the whole of two weeks about how we would go about the elections. We were very sure about winning them and then suddenly the night before the election you come to me with a proposal which sounded absurd. You said you wanted to contest for President. You wanted to replace me in the last minute."

"Yes Kumar and that was because the other group said they would support us only if I was contesting. I tried to convince them that there was no difference between you or me becoming the President. But they were adamant and they said they would not support us if you contested. I dont know what made them change their minds in the last moment."

"Imagine how it would have felt Karan. For two weeks, we spoke to everybody and projected me as the candidate for the election. And when the election were just a night away, you wanted to stand in my place. You were sure we would win it and you wanted to snatch it at the last minute."

"It was not about snatching your opportunity Kumar. It was about doing what was right at that moment of time. It was about winning that election and we had no other option but to project myself."

"Yeah and it was also about cheating your own friend. It was about damaging the trust of somebody who trusted you blindly." Kumar shot back. "You could have told me Karan, but instead you decided to not discuss it anymore. You said it was a waste of time discussing it anymore. You made me feel so little that day Karan."

"I tried to pacify and explain the reasons but you were overcome by anger and blamed me for a lot of things. I tried to ignore whatever you spoke. But you crossed the line when you went very personal and accused me of being selfish and using others for my own goals.", Karan gulped down a glass of cold water as he finished speaking.

"You had reasons for everything you did Karan. You had reasons to replace me as the president nominee in the last minute, you had a reason to ditch Aditi for your career sake."

"That is personal and I don't like you commenting on it Kumar." Karan was angered by Kumar commenting on his relationship.

"It is personal to me as well Karan and that is why I commented. I was witness to what Aditi went through because of you. I shared her pain and watched her suffer all because of you." Kumar's voice had a hint of sadness as he recalled those days.

"I and Aditi have already been through all this Kumar and i don't think it is right for you to discuss this in front of Aditi.", Karan replied curtly.

"You have not been doing any better have you Kumar. Your attempts to get back at me through Rajiv seems to be working well, isn't it? ". It was Karan's turn to question. "Rajiv was along with me in my business plan until you came around and corrupted his mind. Why did you have to resort to such cheap tricks Kumar?"

"Oh, looks like somebody is hurt.", Kumar's voice was sarcastic. "How did it feel to be ditched by somebody whom you trusted all along Karan. Did it hurt you?"

"Enough of it guys. Can you stop behaving like kids. For once, can both of you behave like adults and sort your differences out, instead of taking turns to accuse each other.", Aditi was exasperated. "I wanted you guys to  move on in life." After Aditi's outburst, there was an eerie silence at the table.

The food was served but none of them had any appetite. The discussions sapped their energy and left the three of them weary.

V for Vexed !!

There was an uneasy calm at the table as Karan, Kumar and Aditi waited for each other to initiate a conversation. Neither was sure what to talk or where to begin with none of them wanting to strike the wrong conversation.

Karan and Kumar were yet to recover from the shock of having bumped into each other. Their last meeting ended with each other hurling the choicest abuses at each other. In just a matter of two hours these two close friends ended up as strangers.

The uneasy silence was broken by the ring of Karan's phone. Karan looked at the number and immediately stood up. This was a call he had to take.

"Hey Aditi, I need to take this call. Will not take more than five minutes", Karan said as he moved away from the table. Kumar did not even bother to look up.

"Hello Mr. Mridul. Was not expecting your call. Is everything fine?", Karan was not sure why he was getting a call from the Mumbai team. There were still a few days left for the 15 day deadline.

"Hi Karan. I just received a call from your friend Rajiv. He wanted to get an appointment fixed with our MD Mr. Sudheer. As Sudheer was travelling, I said I will let him know in the next few days."

Karan was surprised at this piece of information. He was not sure how to react.

"I am not sure what Rajiv intends to discuss with Mr. Sudheer. I thought I should let you know of this development, just in case if you are talking to Rajiv. As I told you earlier, make sure everything is in place before the deadline day."

"Thank You for the information Mr. Mridul. I will surely take care. Thank You once again. You have a nice day." Karan disconnected the call and walked back into the restaurant.

Karan was feeling rather vexed with the way the entire situation was panning out. His efforts to reach out to Rajiv were not giving him the desired result and now he was not really sure why Rajiv wanted to talk to Sudheer.

As he walked back to the table, Karan had a lot of questions that he needed answers for. He was pretty sure most of them would be answered in the next few hours.

U for Uneasy !!

"At least now, can you tell me who is your friend who is joining us and when would she be here?", Karan asked Aditi as they made their way to the restaurant from the parking spot.

"What makes you think it is girl, Karan?"Aditi asked with a smile.

"It doesn't really bother me if your friend is a he or a she Adi. I am just curious to know who is that friend."

"He must have reached by now Karan. I guess he would be waiting for us at the table." Aditi spoke as she walked through the restaurant main entrance.

Karan was walking behind her, observing the interiors of the restaurant. It was one of those high end restaurants and the architecture and decor looked breathtakingly beautiful. From the corner of his eye Karan saw Aditi wave her hand to somebody sitting at the table, in the corner of the restaurant. She was blocking his view and Karan had to wait for a few more moments to know her friend.

As they reached the table, Aditi held her hand out to the friend sitting at the table. Karan was checking his phone and as he raised his head to greet her friend, he was speechless.

On the other side, Kumar was stunned to see Karan standing behind Aditi.

"Aditi, is this some kind of a joke", Kumar stood up angrily. "When you said you wanted to meet, this was the last person I wanted to see you with. I cannot stand sight of somebody who could ditch his girlfriend and lover for his career.", Kumar was visibly furious as he blurted out the words.

"The feelings are mutual mate. I too cannot stand sight of a person who does not know the value of friendship and can misuse the trust of his own friends for his personal gains", Karan replied, trying not to raise his voice too much, conscious of his surroundings.

Aditi stood silently, watching both her friends throw verbal abuses at each other. After a few minutes, she finally stepped in to stop both of them.

"Guys, can we behave like grownups for some time. I knew this was bound to happen, but for the sake of me and my friendship with the both of you, I wanted to put an end to this impasse."

"Now if  you two can settle down a bit, we can order some food and try to end this."

Both Karan and Kumar looked enraged at this unexpected face off. But for Aditi, both of them were ready to exchange blows right there.

"Come on people, let us order food, I am starving", Aditi urged both of them, her voice calm and controlled.

As Kumar and Karan sat at either ends of the table, their gaze fixed on the floor below, there was an uneasy calm which engulfed the table.

Aditi knew this was her last and only chance to set things straight.

T for Thrilled !!

"Hi Karan, Aditi here, how you doing?"

After Aditi had messaged her that day, Karan tried reaching her twice but there was no response from her side. He dropped her a message, hoping she would call him back.

"Good time to talk or shall I call you back sometime later?" Aditi's tone sounded very casual.

"Stop it Adi. The other day I had to take an important call. I did call you twice after that, seems like you were busy."

"I was kind of busy with some personal work Karan. I thought I should call you back and finally found time today.", Karan noticed that Aditi's voice had a hint of indifference to it.

"Okay busy girl. To be very honest, your call was a real surprise. Out of the blue, you call me after three years and I wasn't sure if it was for real."

"Yeah, I came to India a few days back. You were one of the few friends I called after landing. But you seemed to be pretty busy that time."

Two words stuck Karan in that sentence. "One of the few friends?", he asked, making sure Aditi caught the stress he put on the words few and friends. "I thought I was the one you would call".

"Your style of talking hasn't changed much, has it?", Aditi asked, her voice sounding a bit sarcastic.

Before Karan could reply, she continued. "Listen Karan, can we meet and talk. It has been a long time since we met and I am not really comfortable talking on the phone. I hope you don't have a problem meeting me personally?"

The question at the end of the statement irked Karan but he did not want to react. "Yeah sure, let me know when. Are we meeting at our regular hangout?"

"No Karan, not at that place. I will book a table at a restaurant. Can you pick me up by 5 in the evening? Also, would you mind if I ask a friend to join us at the restaurant?"

"Friend?" Karan said it out loud as if it was a question."Yeah sure Adi, no problem. Send me your hotel location and I will pick you up from there by 5."

"Okay Karan. Felt nice talking to you after so long. See you at 5. Take care." and Aditi hung up the phone.

Karan was thrilled after talking to Aditi. A three year long wait was about to end in three hours and he could barely control his excitement.

But somewhere in the back of his mind, a question kept nagging him. Who was the friend Aditi spoke about and why did she want Karan to meet that friend.

S for Stunned !!

Kumar looked forward to the two months of the year when he would stay with his grandparents in India. Kumar's parents settled in Dubai and he spent most of his childhood there. His grandparents initially stayed with his Uncle, but as his father's wealth grew, Kumar made sure his grandparents had a place of their own. He loved them a lot and did not want them to be dependent on anybody.

Every year, Kumar made it a point to spend at least two months in India, with his grandparents. It was during one of these vacations that Kumar first met her. One evening, his grandpa told him about the family which stayed next door, who were helpful and caring. The head of the family would drop in occasionally to check on them. He also spoke about their young daughter and the many evenings she spent with the old couple. Kumar liked it when others cared about his grandparents like he did.

Sunday mornings were meant to be lazy and Kumar intended to keep it that way. He was rolling around in his bed, not too keen to get up early. Just when he was about to go back to sleep, he heard his grandmother call out his name. He could also hear a girl's voice talking to his grandmother and that was enough cue for him to quickly get out of bed.

As Kumar made his way into the hall, he saw her for the first time, animatedly talking to his grandmother. She was helping her setup breakfast and she looked like she was completely at home. The ease with which she was moving around the house, made him wonder who she could be.

His thoughts were broken by his grandma's voice. "Hey Kumar, this is Aditi. She was the girl your grandpa was telling you about yesterday."

"Hi", shouted Aditi, before she rushed off into the kitchen to get a dish.Setting the dish down on the table, she came to Kumar to shake hands.

"Hi, I am Aditi. I stay next door but spend most of my time with both of them". she said pointing to the old couple.

"Thank you so much." he said shaking her hands.

"Now that you are here, I can also do with some good company as long as I am here. Hope you wouldn't mind."

"Absolutely not.I am relatively new to this colony and am also looking for friends.I can do with a good friend as well", Aditi said with a smile.

It had been more than ten years to the day that conversation took place. Their friendship grew with time. Both of them looked forward to the two months that Kumar would be in India. As time flew by, Aditi moved to another city for her graduation and Kumar got admission into a university in Dubai.

Kumar and Aditi were meeting today after a long time. While Kumar moved back to India for his Post graduation, Aditi shifted base to Australia. She was back in town after three years and he was the first person she planned to catch up with.

Kumar was eagerly looking forward to meet Aditi. As he was waiting at the restaurant, he kept glancing at the door, wanting to catch a glimpse of her as she walked in. But the moment Aditi walked into the restaurant, the color drained from his face.

Kumar was stunned to see Karan standing behind Aditi.

R for Regret !!

"What did you want to talk about so urgently Adi?", asked Karan sipping his favorite ice tea.

He and Aditi were at their usual hangout, by the lake side. They had frequented this place many a times in the last three years, occasionally with friends, but mostly just the two of them. Today appeared no different, but Karan sensed Aditi was occupied with some other thoughts.

"Karan, for the last few days I was thinking about our future.", Aditi spoke softly.

"What about it Aditi. The future is ours, you and me together forever."

"Karan, can you get serious for once. In two weeks, we will be graduating. Have you thought what you want to do next."

"You know my interviews for MBA admissions are scheduled in the next month."

"I know that Karan", Aditi interrupted him. "I am asking you about us."

"What about us Aditi, I don't understand. We have been through this a lot of times before. You will get into your dream company, I will finish my MBA and then we will be together."

"Karan, you are talking about two years of being away, occupied with our priorities."

"I am not sure how that will change anything Aditi. Being away will not change my love for you Aditi. However filmy that may sound, that is a fact."

"Karan, Lets get engaged", Aditi looked into his eyes.

The statement caught Karan by surprise. "What?, he blurted out", trying very hard not to lose his cool. "Get engaged? What is wrong with you Aditi."

"I don't see anything wrong in getting engaged Karan. I am not sure what is so surprising.", Aditi raised her voice by a pitch.

"Aditi, is this because you don't believe me? You want a commitment from me and hence this idea of getting engaged?"

Karan's questions were met by a silent stare from Aditi.

"Adi, tell me you are just kidding. I cannot believe that you are doubting my commitment towards you."

"I am not doubting anything Karan, I am just saying let us get engaged. Let us talk to our parents, tell them about our relationship and get engaged. I am very sure neither my parents nor your parents will object. I am sure they already know about us. Let us just make the obvious more obvious".

"If it is so obvious then why do you want to do this Aditi", Karan shot back with his question.

"Why do you not want to do this Karan, is there something I am missing here"

Karan did not answer straight away. He paused as if trying to put his thoughts together. When he started to speak, he looked straight at Aditi.

"I need time Aditi. I need to settle down in my career before I can talk to amma or appa about this."

"What do you mean by settle down?", Aditi struggled for words.

"Look Aditi, you know what my family has been through financially. But for my uncle's help, my family would have been no where close to where we are now. Even in these circumstances, my parents made sure I was always happy. They gave me a chance to study at a reputed college, never ever saying no to my whims and fancies. I know all that my dad had been through but he never backed off from giving us the best."

"Karan, listen", Aditi tried to interrupt him.

"Let me finish Adi.", Karan continued."I wanted to make it big in business for the same reason. I want to be the reason for my parents happiness and make sure all their sacrifices do not go in vain. It is time for me to start building towards my dream."

"So do I Karan, I want you to be successful for the very same reason. I don't see how our decision now is going to change your dream", Aditi was trying hard to control her emotions.

"I cannot go to my parents and talk about this now Aditi. I will need time. Let me settle down and start a career. I am sure my parents would not say no, but please understand my situation. When they are expecting me to start making a career, I cannot talk to them about this."

Aditi was stunned after Karan's outburst. Struggling to hold her tears back, she tried to speak, "I still don't understand Karan. You want me to wait for three years so that you can settle down and then comeback to me. Did you think of what I am supposed to do Karan?"

"I sincerely wish you succeed but what if you take more than three years. How can you be sure it is only three and not eight. You want me to keep waiting for you till you settle down. How do you define settling down Karan?. Would a well paid job mean settling down or would a successful business qualify as being successful." Aditi was no longer trying to hide her emotions.

"Aditi, I Love you and you know that as well. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. You and my career are both important to me. For a better future for both of us, I have to make sure my career takes off in the right path."

"I cannot understand what future you are talking of Karan, when you are not bothered about the present. The future you are talking of is all about you."

"I have not seen this coming Karan and i feel ashamed of myself for thinking I knew everything about you."

"It is not that Aditi. Please.", Karan pleaded her.

"It is over Karan. I never ever imagined I would say this, but it is all over."

"Stop saying that Aditi", Karan's voice was barely audible to Aditi as she walked out.

It had been almost three years since the discussion happened. The morning after the discussion, Aditi regretted her decision to walk out without talking it out. May be Karan's argument had a reason and she was unable to see through it.  But try as much she could not get over the discussion.

The next few days, Aditi barely spoke or met anybody. The argument had left her numb and she needed to time to recoup. As she started to move on with life it was her childhood friend Kumar who made sure she was back to her bubbly normal self. As time passed, so did her feeling of regret

Q for Quietened !!

"Tell me Rajiv, what do you say?"

After several futile attempts, Karan had finally managed to reach out to Rajiv.

After the telephonic discussion with the MD, Karan knew he had to make one final attempt to get Rajiv back into the team. Having made multiple calls to Rajiv with no avail, Karan finally decided to meet him at his place.

"Listen Rajiv, I know how you feel about the whole thing. But you have to got to understand and look at the bigger picture here. I have already briefed you about my discussions with the MD. They are showing a keen interest in our idea and are ready to take it to the next level."

Even as Karan kept on talking, Rajiv was sitting quietly. Karan was not very sure whether he was paying attention to what was being said.

"You can be the point of contact for our team. We have been through this earlier Rajiv, I am not interested to hog the limelight or run the show by myself. For me it was always about the team and it still is.", Karan continued passionately.

"But Karan, Kumar told me that is what you always wanted to do, hog the limelight at the expense of anybody, be it your own team mate". Rajiv spoke suddenly.

It was Karan's turn to be quietened. Two words in the statement hit him hard. Hogging the limelight was one, but the mention of Kumar made Karan go quite.

"Kumar? Where did Kumar come into the picture Rajiv and what did he tell you?", Karan questioned, even as he struggled for words.

P for Pain

What initially started off as a discussion stream rolled into an argument and with emotions flying high, the situation went out of control. The best of friends were now hurling abuses at each other.

For days to come, both of them hoped that things would gradually get back to normal. But it was not to be.

Both of them knew they had to live with the pain for the rest of their lives.

While Karan blamed himself and wished time would ease the pain, Kumar let the pain grow with him and slowly somewhere unknown to him, the pain was replaced by a feeling jealousy.

O for Overjoyed!!

"Okay Mr. Narayan, that sounds fine with me. As discussed we can give you an extension of 15 days to make the final presentation."

"Thank you Mr. Sudheer. I appreciate your support."

"Also please make sure you tie up all the loose ends before the deadline day. We would still prefer to have Mr. Rajiv on your team. His capabilities seem unmatched and he would be an asset to your team. I am sure you know how that would help us in turn."

Karan let out a sigh of exasperation, but made sure it was not audible on the phone. He knew it was difficult to convince Rajiv, but he had time on his side and that made him a bit comfortable.

"Okay Sudheer. I am sure our team would put in the best efforts to make the final presentation a deal clincher and repay your confidence. Thank you so much. Have a nice day."

As Karan disconnected the call, he saw the message notification on his phone.

The message read - "Hi, this is Aditi. I hope you recognized me. Call back once you are free."

Karan was overjoyed at the sudden turn of events. First it was the call from Mumbai, just when he thought things were not going well, they gave him a time extension.

And then Aditi's voice after almost three years, followed by her message. Life suddenly started to feel a lot better.

As Karan sat down to call Aditi, he couldn't stop smiling.

N for Nervous !!

"Mr. Narayan, this is Mridul from Mumbai. We have gone through your email. The news was indeed surprising and quite unexpected. We have had an internal discussion regarding the future course of action. The Managing Director wanted to have a discussion with you before we proceed further."

"Sure sir, let me know when should I be travelling to Mumbai", Karan asked politely.

"It will be a telephonic discussion. He will be calling you in an hour. We as a team are impressed with the idea that you have presented, but the onus is on you to set the course right before we proceed further.", Mridul made it sound like an advice before disconnecting the call.

Karan was not sure what to expect from the call with the MD.

As was his habit, he immediately started jotting down his options on a piece of paper. He realized he did not have too many options to play around with it.

His best bet would have been to convince Rajiv to get back in to the team. He had made every possible effort but was left with nothing but frustration.

Another option was to convince the MD about the capabilities of the team to deliver without Rajiv. But it would be a hard sell, as Rajiv's capabilities were well known to the Mumbai team as well.

Accepting that Rajiv's absence was a setback would surely minimize the chances of the Mumbai team going ahead with the proposal.

As Karan was lost in thought, trying to figure out the right cards to play, his phone rang.

The phone ring made him nervous but he knew this was his last chance. The number looked familiar and Karan was even surprised when he heard a woman's voice on the call.

"Hi Karan, how are you doing?", the voice was unforgettable. Karan wasn't sure if this was happening for real.

"Hey hi, I am good. I am sorry but can I please call you back on the same number after a while.", Karan's voice was a mixture of excitement and nervousness.

Even as Karan waited for a reply, he could hear the call waiting tone and his screen displayed an incoming call from a land line number.

Karan's nervousness multiplied. He had to disconnect a call for which he had waited for three years and receive a call that could potentially change his future.

"Yes Mr. Sudheer, Karan here".

M for Magical !!

"Will you say it or do you want me to take the chance away from you?", Karan whispered in her ear.

"Karan, stop it now and please let me watch the movie", she pushed away his hand in mock frustration.

"Oh come on Aditi. Say it now and I will keep gifting you DVD's of all the movies you want to watch, for my entire life." Karan continued to bother her.

It was a friend's birthday and their party plan included watching a movie followed by lunch. Karan and Aditi were pushed to the corner seats, their friends wanted to watch the movie in peace and not be disturbed by their never ending chatter.

"Aditi, So you want me to say it?", Karan kept on nagging her with his non stop questions.

"I will tell you once the movie is over Karan. Now keep calm and let me watch the movie.", Aditi replied back.

"Oh, so you agree to be the one who is saying it first. Good" Karan slid back into his seat and closed his eyes. The movie was just an excuse for him.

"So when do you plan to say the magical words" Karan asked Aditi, as she was driving the vehicle. Karan was pillion riding on her two wheeler and sensed the chance to raise the question again. Aditi looked as if she was uninterested, but the grin on her face gave away her feelings.

"Stop it Karan. How many times do I tell you not to start this discussion. Can we talk about something else?" Aditi shot back at him. Karan just nodded as if to say okay.

"Hey Aditi, can you stop for a second.", Karan shouted from behind. Aditi immediately stopped the vehicle by the side of the road, not sure why Karan wanted her to stop.

Karan got down from the vehicle and started searching his pockets frantically.

"What is it Karan, did you drop your keys somewhere?", Aditi quizzed him.

Karan seemed to find what he was looking for and held it up proudly.

"A Chocolate?" Aditi was surprised and angry. "Is this why you wanted me to stop in the middle of the road".

"Yeah a chocolate. Just for you. I thought you would be hungry." Karan replied calmly. "Here take a bite."

Aditi grabbed the chocolate to throw it but held it back. "Go on open it now", Karan prodded her.

"Can I take it home".

"I will get you another one to take home. Now open this Aditi.", Karan sounded as if he was tensed.

As Aditi unwrapped the chocolate, she was taken aback. It was a personalized chocolate with "Happy Birthday" written on it. "Thank You Karan, but don't consider this to be my birthday gift", Aditi retarded.

"Flip it to get your birthday gift Aditi", Karan said, almost in a whisper.

"Stop kidding Karan", Aditi said flipping the chocolate and was left searching for words.

On the back of the chocolate, written in white were the three magical words.

As Aditi looked up in surprise, Karan fell on one knee, "I Love You Aditi. For the rest of your life, will you spend every birthday with me.".

Aditi stood there, a mixture of emotions running through her mind. She was too awestruck to speak. Every word she tried to speak, seemed to escape as a tear from her eye.

"Hey Aditi, can you say something quickly, my knee seems to be going numb", Karan tried to bring her back to her senses with the pathetic one liner.

But Aditi was lost in thought. The moment felt magical. She had dreamt of this every night for the last one year and it was happening right now.

"Madam, this is the location you asked for", the cab driver's voice broke her stream of thoughts and brought her back to the present. The one hour drive from the airport to the hotel seemed like a few moments, as she relived the past.

L for Love !!

Love brought her closer to him, it brought them together.

And then it was the very love which made her want to pursue her Masters overseas.

Her friends told her it was the same love which created a rift between them.

And now, the hope of winning her love back made her travel back to the city.

Love was an emotion which changed her life not once but twice and Aditi wanted to give it a third and final chance to change her life forever.

K for Kind !!

Kumar hailed from a rich family. His parents had settled in Dubai and had earned enough wealth to let their next generation sail through the riches.

Kumar stayed with his grandparents in India. He wanted to make sure his grandparents were not left alone and hence he decided to use education as a reason to stay with them. After a lot of discussion, his parents had agreed to his wish to pursue his higher education in India.

Two years of his education went through pretty quickly. His college life had memories that he would cherish for a lifetime, friendships that would remain forever and lessons learnt that made him a better individual.

Kumar was admired and adored by everybody in college. He had qualities which made a lot of people envious. Brilliant at academics, Kumar was equally good in a lot of other fields.  He was an excellent cricket player and equally good at a lot of other sports. Good at music and art, his literary skills made him stand out from the crowd. All these qualities were dwarfed in front of his character.

Never the one to say no, Kumar was always available to anybody who wanted help. Any request for help was always greeted with a smile. Personal or monetary never mattered. Having been brought up in riches, Kumar never really worried about money. Every fortnight he spent a day at an old age home, sharing smiles with the senior citizens. That gave him a sense of satisfaction, a high which money never gave him. He donated generously to a lot of institutions and organisations and to anybody who were in need of money. Kumar was kind and generous and there were very few who argued against it.

But there are situations in life which impact an individual and change his character.

When it came to Karan, Kumar knew being kind was not an option !!

J for Joy !!

She glanced at her watch and sighed. She had been on the flight for the last 12 hours and there was still a good two hours to go before she would touch down.

She was away for the last three years, two years of it spent in getting her Masters Degree and the next one year exploring the country, meeting new people. She had no plans to come to India, but an email changed her plans.

It was 3 weeks back that she received a mail. A batch get together was being planned and the email was an invitation for the same. It was almost four years since they graduated and this was the first get together. The invitation was a generic one that was sent out to the entire batch. She realized not too many people would expect her to be present.

After two days of deliberation, she decided she did not want to miss out on the fun. There were a lot of people she wanted to meet. She knew there was a possibility of bumping into him, but that did not deter her from making the trip. Three years was a long time and she was hopeful about things being different. She wanted to give it another chance.

"We will be touching down at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in 5 minutes. The temperature outside is a warm 22 degrees. Enjoy your stay in Hyderabad.". The pilot's booming voice brought her back to the present.

In five minutes she would be in Hyderabad. She wanted this to be a surprise to everybody including her family and hence there  were no calls made.

As she waited for the luggage to arrive, Aditi was filled with Joy for having finally made it to Hyderabad.

Maybe this was a trip that might change a lot of things and she looked forward to it !!
